After gaining global recognition for advancing 5G and IoT network technology, it will continue its efforts to lead the upcoming 5G era

Seoul, South Korea, June 13, 2018 – SK Telecom (NYSE: SKM) today announced that the company has won two awards at the TechXLR8 Awards 2018, the world’s renowned ICT awards, held on June 12 at London’s Gibson Hall, England.

Buttressed by its innovative 5G and IoT technology, the company has named the winner of two awards at this year’s event including the “Best Network Development of the Year Award” and “Best IoT Connectivity Solution.”

“The TechXLR8 (Technology Accelerator 8) Awards,” sponsored by Informa Telecom&Media, a global ICT research institute, celebrate innovative technologies in seven tech fields including 5G, VR & AR and IoT, and in about 20 categories during the London Tech Week 2018.

At the TechXLR8 Awards 2018, SK Telecom has named the winner of the “Best Network Development of the Year Award” for its next-generation AI network TANGO and virtualized network management platform T-MANO.

“TANGO (T Advanced Next Generation OSSOperational Supporting System)” is a big data analysis- and machine learning-based AI network management system that spots and solves network problems and optimizes itself. SK Telecom applied TANGO to the wired network in December 2016 and expanded the system to the wireless network last October. Being recognized for its innovative technology, TANGO, last September, the company signed a strategic partnership with Bharti Airtel, India’s largest telecommunications services provider.

SK Telecom developed “T-MANO,” virtualized network equipment and software management platform and applied it to commercial LTE network last July. It is scheduled to deploy it to the 5G network.

SK Telecom has also received an honor in the “Best IoT Connectivity Solution” award category for its IoT hybrid network.

This March, the company deployed nationwide LTE Cat.M1, which allows simultaneous transmission of low volume video, high-definition image and voice recording. Prior to that, in March 2016, it completed the deployment of nationwide LTE-M, which is capable of high volume data transmission, and completed deploying LoRa, long-range, low-power wireless platform for IoT connectivity in July. This helped the company complete the nationwide hybrid IoT network that is capable of simultaneously processing low-volume and high-volume data.

“SK Telecom has won two awards at the TechXLR8 Awards 2018, which proves our efforts to advance 5G and IoT network technology were recognized globally,” said Park Jong-Kwan, Senior Vice President and Head of ICT R&D Center of SK Telecom. “We will continue to upgrade our technology to lead the upcoming 5G era.”

“At London Tech Week 2018’s conferences, we will share the outcome of our 5G demonstration and trial services and unveil our 5G commercialization roadmap in the near future,” said Jo Sung-ho, Senior Director & Head of Access Network Lab of SK Telecom.
